An Order to Things is a Substack about a novel in progress — and the question the novel is asking.
The novel is called An Order to Things. It’s literary fiction set in New York, built around a detective named Bishop, a woman named Andi, and the institutional world that runs quietly beneath both of their lives. It’s about power and identity and what happens to a person when the framework they built their life on turns out to be insufficient.
These posts are not a journal of the writing process. They are an extension of the thinking behind the novel — fragments of the question it’s asking, dispatched every two weeks while the book becomes itself.
The reader who finds this Substack useful is probably already living somewhere inside the question. They know what it costs to build a life on earned worth. They’ve been near someone who moved through difficulty with a freedom they couldn’t account for. They’ve wondered, quietly, where they’ve substituted a convincing story for the truth itself.
If that’s you — you’re in the right place.
